Softball coaches gain instruction at Racers seminar
Written by Andrew PhillipsThe Akron Racers will host a coaching seminar May 28 at Firestone Stadium, the home of the Akron Racers, located in Akron. The seminar will provide instruction on how coaches can help their athletes improve their softball skills, knowledge and ability to execute through proper communications with their players.
Instructors are currently scheduled to be Akron Racers’ players Nicole Trimboli (outfielder/first base), Lisa Modglin (outfielder), Taylor Schlopy (outfielder) and Kristina Thorson (pitcher). More instructors may be announced as the seminar date approaches.
On May 12 at 11 a.m., 1,500 little leaguers will line up on Main Street for the third annual All-American Baseball & Softball Parade. Teams will come from North Akron, Goodyear Heights, Ellet, Kenmore, West Akron Little League and West Akron Baseball League. Main street will be shut down to traffic at 10:50 a.m. for the parade, which will step off rain or shine at Main and Cedar streets downtown and run north along Main to Bowery. The route will head west on Bowery and end behind Lock 3.
“All of the kids love walking in a big parade downtown. This event is all about honoring them and making them feel special,” said Akron’s Community Event Coordinator Brittany Schmoekel. The city of Akron Recreation Bureau will present trophies immediately following the parade from the stage at Lock 3, and 98.1 WKDD will announce each parade unit from the judges’ stage located near the end of the parade route on Main Street across from Lock 3.
Akron Racers encourage community to 'strike out' cancer May 29
Written by Andrew PhillipsThe Akron Racers will turn its baseball cleats for bowling shoes at Stonehedge Family Fun Center May 29 for the Strike Out Cancer charity event. Members of the Akron Racers professional softball team and coaching staff will be in attendance for bowling.
They have the skills for softball, but can they bowl? Residents who attend the event will find out. The cost is $10 per person, and group rates are available for a group of four for $35. Check-in is at 6 p.m. and the event start at 6:30 p.m. and complete once all bowlers are finished. The registration fee includes two games of bowling and shoes.
The Akron Racers now offers 2012 single game tickets for all 25 regular season home games. The Racers team will begin its 11th campaign in professional softball and its ninth season in National Pro Fastpitch with an exhibition game against the Northeast Ohio All-stars at June 4 at 7:05 p.m.
The 2012 regular season opener will take place at Firestone Stadium on June 7 as the Akron Racers host the newly formed Carolina Diamonds in a four game series.
