Education In Action program finishes house No. 17

(Editor's note: the following is a news release from the City of Akron.)

The Education in Action program has been around since 1997, and every year it produces another home for another Akron family.

This year's is on Florida Avenue and is now on the market.

Education in Action is a partnership of the Akron Public Schools, the city, the Home Builders Association and the Urban Neighborhood Development Corporation.

With the help of experts in the building trades, and Pioneer Builders, a group of students did everything from drywall to electrical work and plumbing on the home.

So far, the program has taught building skills to more than 500 students, who have received intense teaching and training from builders and subcontractors. The students also have the chance to have an on-the-jop interview and, perhaps, land a job.

Mayor Don Plusquellic said of the program, "I have yet to find anything that provides better hands-on experience than this for our young people. I'm very proud of what these kids have done and grateful for our partners' help."
